CASE STUDY: WORLD CUP 2002

THE OPPORTUNITY

World Cup 2002 was being held in Korea, and European and Asian operators wanted a video-like content service that would bring motion picture images directly to subscriber’s color mobile phones.

THE PROBLEMS

The technology was just emerging in 2002, and true video delivery was a technical impossiblity to any handset except the most advanced in Japan and Korea. In addition, licensing live video made the service cost prohibitive.

THE SOLUTION

In association with Gerrit Jan Konijnenberg of 3G Media Consult in The Netherlands, Robinson led the creative team at CinemaElectric to develop a “moving-picture” product based on still images licensed from AFP, the French photo & news service.

Robinson supervised the process, whereby digital photos of the match were taken in Korea, sent electronically to Paris, then distributed to Hollywood, where “PocketCinema™” artists created small GIF animations that fit the stringent technical requirements of i-Mode phones in Europe and color GSM phones in Thailand.

The finished product with captions was then electronically distributed to Bangkok and Amsterdam, where in the latter case, 3G Media Consult distributed the service via i-Mode to an anxious subscribers (now at work) in Germany, Belgium and The Netherlands.
